The Reflection in the Cistern
Deep in the abandoned copper mine, Marcus tested the water levels of the subterranean cistern, his flashlight cutting a weak beam through the damp darkness. The surface of the water was unnaturally still, acting like a polished mirror reflecting the damp stone ceiling above. As he knelt to collect a sample, the reflection in the water blinked, though Marcus kept his own eyes wide open in sheer disbelief. Before he could stand up, a pair of cold, wet hands reached up from the black depths, gripping his shoulders with impossible strength. He struggled against the freezing pull, but as he looked down one last time, he saw his own face staring back from the water, smiling broadly as he was dragged down into the abyss.
