Coffee and Starlight
Every Tuesday at midnight, Elena ran the night shift at the neon-lit diner by the interstate, watching the world blur past her window. Marcus was her only regular, a weary long-haul trucker who always ordered black coffee and sat in the very last booth. For months, they exchanged nothing more than polite nods and weary smiles, insulated by the quiet hum of the refrigerator. But tonight, a massive blackout plunged the highway and the diner into sudden, absolute darkness. Instead of panicking, Marcus pulled two small candles from his glove box and walked over to Elena's counter, offering a quiet spark of light in the heavy gloom. Over the flicker of the flame, they finally spoke their true names and shared secrets of the roads that brought them together.
