The Copper Compass
Clara kept her grandfather's heavy copper compass on her desk as a paperweight, believing it was broken because the needle always spun in circles. It had traveled across oceans during the war, but in her modern office, it seemed entirely useless, a relic of a grandfather she barely remembered. One rainy afternoon while packing her apartment to move across the country, she dropped the compass on the hardwood floor, causing the back panel to finally spring open. Inside lay a tiny folded photograph of her grandparents smiling on a forgotten beach, alongside a note written in fading ink. The note read that the compass only pointed true when love was the destination, not the cardinal directions. Tears welled in Clara's eyes as she realized her grandfather was guiding her toward a life lived with passion, not precision.
